The Montgomery Building

Built in 1924, The Montgomery Building was designed by Lockwood Greene & Company. The Montgomery family, for whom the building was named, was a leader of the post-1920s textile industry for over 150 years. In addition to cotton broker and factory offices, it housed a radio station and historic theatre, which featured an interior box office, balcony, and thirty-six-foot proscenium. Until the 1950s, this Chicago skeletal frame construction skyscraper was Spartanburg’s tallest building.
